Our Volunteers The Frederick County Chapter American Red Cross welcomes Marilyn Wright as a new volunteer. Marilyn comes to the chapter after 21 years of her family owning and operating 2 Hallmark stores in the Northern Virginia area. As the General Manager of the family business Marilyn was involved in every aspect of business management. Following her retirement from the Hallmark stores, Marilyn and her husband decided to relocate to the Frederick area so they could be closer to family members living in Point of Rocks. Marilyn said “I’ve always had a passion for the Red Cross and have been a blood donor for many years.” As a business owner Marilyn provided financial support to the Hugo relief effort and other disasters. However, Marilyn always wanted to do more. After retiring she saw an ad in the newspaper for a Red Cross volunteer orientation and decided she had the time and wanted to learn about the opportunities available. Marilyn finds the Red Cross is the perfect place for her to apply her business skills in new and exciting ways. Marilyn is currently active in Disaster Volunteer Staff Services, received training as a caseworker for Services to Armed Forces (SAF), and is completing the necessary training to become a Disaster Action Team member responding to local emergencies. Marilyn states the things she likes best about volunteering with the Frederick County Chapter are the flexibility with her schedule. Additionally she finds that the staff has been wonderful to work with and provided her the necessary tools and training to be more helpful and productive. What started as a simple desire to volunteer at local blood drives has turned into the discovery of many additional positive volunteer experiences with the American Red Cross.
