Emergency Services Training Classes

January 2008 – June 2008


Chapter volunteer orientation and background check must be completed before enrolling in disaster training. Please read course descriptions with pre requisites below the schedule very carefully to ensure you are enrolling in appropriate training.

Pre-registration is required for all emergency services training at least one week in advance. Please e-mail dshr@frederickredcross.org to register for disaster training, or call 301-662-5131. All training will be held at the Chapter House in Walkersville unless announced otherwise

Disaster Class Descriptions

Introduction to Frederick County Disaster Services – This initial class for all disaster volunteers includes both Fulfilling Our Mission and Introduction to Disaster Services. These two basic courses orient new volunteers to American Red Cross Disaster Services, how services are provided and the opportunities for volunteering.

Mass Care Overview – An introduction to the basic Mass Care Services provided by the Red Cross involving feeding and sheltering of disaster clients. Pre-requisite – Fulfilling Our Mission

Client Casework: Providing Emergency Assistance – Introduces the Family Services function. Describes assignments settings and provides knowledge, skills and tools needed to conduct a quality interview and provide effective client service, including direct assistance and referrals.

Foundations of Disaster Mental Health
The purpose of this basic level Disaster Services training is to prepare licensed mental health professionals to provide for and respond to the psychological needs of people across the continuum of disaster preparedness, response and recovery. Requires current state license

Fundamentals of Disaster Assessment (Pt. 1 On Line & Pt. 2 Classroom)
This basic level Disaster Services course introduces the critical role of Disaster Assessment, explores related preparedness tasks, and teaches how to collect and communicate disaster assessment information, and become familiar with how disaster assessment information supports management and service delivery decisions. The Frederick County Chapter offers the On Line portion (Pt. 1) in a group setting for those interested in completing the training in this manner.
Pre-requisite – Fulfilling Our Mission required for on-line portion. Successful completion of on line portion required to enroll in classroom component.

Health Services Response Workshop
The purpose of this workshop is to prepare licensed or certified health professionals to either work in their local chapter jurisdiction or be deployed to a Red Cross disaster relief operation and function as health professionals withint the Health Services Protocols. Pre-requisite – Fulfilling Our Mission.

Logistics (Material Support Services) Overview

Provides basic information about the activities and processes of the Material Support Services (Logistics) function. Participants will learn about the skills, abilities, and knowledge needed by Material Support Services (Logistics) workers and how they can get started in their local chapter. 

Shelter Operations/Shelter Simulation – Provides participant information on procedure of opening/closing Red Cross shelters. Discusses needs for, assessment of and provides a document for further use by participant. Simulation provides ‘hands on’ implementation of opening/closing a shelter. Shelter Operations must be completed to enroll in Shelter Simulation.
