DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Disaster Services Program
Assistant – Americorps*VISTA
SUPERVISOR: Director Emergency Services
SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Develop and implement community disaster educational projects targeting
at-risk populations in Frederick County. Assist in increasing chapter’s
ability to provide disaster assistance through increase in sheltering
capabilities.
DESIRED ATTRIBUTES
College degree; experience working with volunteers and/or non-profit organizations;
ability to develop plans and coordinate programs; excellent verbal and
written communication skills; proficient computer skills; good organizational
skills; ability to meet pre-determined goals with minimal supervision.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Initiate and develop public disaster education programs designed to
help people prevent and prepare for emergencies, and live safe lives in
their homes.
2. Identify target population groups and develop and implement programs
to reach those groups.
3. Be available to respond to local disasters and emergency requests for
assistance on an occasional basis.
4. Assist in building the capacity of the chapter to respond to disasters
through the development of independent shelter teams to support mass care
functions.
5. Help assure community awareness of the availability of services, courses
and programs.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Maintain a professional relationship with all volunteer and paid staff
members, members of other businesses and non-profit organizations, and
the general public.
2. Present a neat appearance, display a pleasant personality, and strive
to project a caring, sensitive and sympathetic attitude toward clients,
volunteers and clients.
3. Comply with all VISTA and chapter rules and regulations, including,
but not limited to, By-Laws, Personnel Policies, Chapter Policies, Program
of Work and Administrative Policies.
4. Strive to constantly increase the level of customer satisfaction among
clients.
5. Attend meetings and job-related training opportunities when requested.
6. Prepare, complete and submit all required reports by the expected deadlines.
7. Participate in initial and annual work performance reviews.
8. In conjunction with the Director Emergency Services, develop an annual
Program of Work, including a detailed outline of the year’s goals, objectives
and action plans, and adhere to expectations outlined therein.
9. Report to the Director of Emergency Services all violations of rules
and policies, and unusual events that have the potential to affect the
chapter in an adverse manner.
16. Perform reasonable and customary office duties.
VISTA PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS AND BENEFITS
1. Be at least 18 years of age.
2. Be a U.S. citizen or a legal resident alien.
3. Possess a high school diploma or GED.
4. Possess a current driver’s license.
5. Serve for at least 12 months (minimum of 1700 service hours), but for
no more than 24 months.
6. Work Mondays through Fridays for 37.5 hours per week, but be available
for weekends and evenings.
7. Members may not hold another job or be in school during the time period.
8. Be committed to teaching and training.
9. Demonstrate flexibility, professionalism and self-initiative.
10. Members will receive a living allowance of $9,300 for the year, training,
and health care coverage.
11. After the completion of one year of service, members will be eligible
for either an educational award of $4,725, or a cash award of $1,200.
Position begins following Americorps*VISTA orientation late
October 2004.
